Event info Swimrun Portugal Lagoa; This takes place along the Algarve coast lying to the south of the town of Lagoa. This course was voted one of the best in Europe by swimrunners in 2024, and includes the best hiking trail in Europe across the Seven Hanging Valleys, crossing the Way of the Promontories to finish in the picturesque fishing village of Ferragudo.

Event Info Swimrun Portugal Lagoa

Location

Lagoa, on the Algarve Coast in the South of Portugal. Lagoa is named after a lagoon that no longer exists. Lagoa is about 40 minutes west of Faro by car.

How to get there

The closest airport is Faro. From Faro you can take a bus, a taxi, or simply hire a car and drive to Lagoa. Driving your own car will take around 40 minutes, while the bus will take 1 hour 15 minutes.

Where to stay

Swimrun Portugal has not made any recommendations. However, there is plenty of choice in the area at AirBnB, Booking.com and other accommodation websites.

Race distances

There are 4 race distances at Lagoa:

A Kids distance event
An Experience (Intro)
a Sprint distance of 11 km,
and a Standard distance of 24.4 km.

The 11 km race involves 4 swim legs and 5 running sections. The total swim distance is 2.7 km and total run distance is 8.4 km.

The 24.4 km event involves 4.78 km of swimming over 7 legs, and 19.6 km of running over 8 legs.

You can enter any of the distances as a solo competitor or as a team of two.

Race routes

All the races finish at the same place,Ferragudo. There is a large parking area facing the beach just to the south of Ferragudo. From the southern end of the car park you can get a bus to the start area of your race.

Be warned, in the Standard distance race, the second run section takes a long loop inland, away from the sea!

Energy stations

Around each course there are several water stops, offering hydration (water and electrolyte drinks), and fruit.

Cut-off times

The Sprint race has a cut-off time of 4 hours from the starting gun, while the longer Standard race has a cut-off of 6 hours from the starting gun.

Weather

Held around mid-May, the water is still cool from winter, but starting to warm up! The weather is usually warm but a little unpredictable. The water temperature is around 18 degrees C, according to the race organiser. Most athletes do NOT wear wetsuits for the 2 shorter events, but the organisers recommend a wetsuit for the Sprint and Standard distance races.

There is always a chance of cold or wet weather, so you should take suitable clothing for every eventuality!
