Location
The event is based at Miami Beach, south of Surfer's Paradise.
How to get there
The closest airport is Gold Coast Airport, (previously known as Coolangatta Airport). This is very close to the swimrun action, and is your best choice if you are flying in! There is also Brisbane International, but it's about 90 km to the north of the Gold Coast. The airport is served by Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar as well as some other airlines.
From the airport you can either hire a car, or else get a taxi or a bus to Miami Beach.
Where to stay
There is no specific accommodation recommended by Swimrun Australia.
However, there is plenty of choice in the area at AirBnB, Booking.com and other accommodation websites.
Race distances
There are 4 race distances:
The 'Stroke 'n' Stride' 2 km intro race is barefoot (no gear!). There are 2 swim legs and 3 run sections.
The 5 km race involves 3 swim legs and 4 running sections. The total swim distance is 1.25 km and total run distance is 3.9 km.
The 12 km event includes 1.9 km of swimming over 5 legs, and 10.4 km of running, over 6 legs.
The 20 km event involves 3.1 km of swimming over 7 legs, and 16.9 km of running over 8 legs.
You can enter any of the distances as a solo competitor or as a team of two.
Interestingly, the swim-to-run ratio gets gradually less as you move to the longer race distances. For the supersprint the swim takes up 27% of the total race distance. For the Sprint race it is 25%. For the Short race distance the swim-to-run ratio is 18%, and in the Long distance it is about 15%.
Race routes
All races finish at Don MacSween Park, Miami Beach.
The SuperSprint is an out-and-back route starting and finishing by Don MacSween Park, after a loop around North Burleigh Headland.
The Sprint race starts at Ronnie Long Park, next to the Tallebudgera Surf Life Saving Club, and heads North, all the way to the finish at Don MacSween Park .
The Short event starts at just before Elephant Rock at Currumbin Beach, heads North over Currumbin Creek past Tallebudgera, over Tallebudgera Creek, and finishes at Don MacSween Park.
The Long race starts at Rainbow Bay Beach, by Snapper Rocks, follows the same route North as the shorter events, over Currumbin Creek, and continues all the way to the finish at at Don MacSween Park.
Energy stations
Around each course there are several water stops, offering hydration (water and electrolyte drinks), and fruit.
Cut-off times
There are no cut-off times for the SuperSprint, the Sprint and the Short races;
However, there are several cut-offs for the Long event: After a Start at 06:45, you must be at the Currumbin hydration station before 08:30, the Tallebudgera hydration station by 09:30, Rudd Park by 10:00, and the Finish Line by 10:30. These cut-offs equate to an overall swimming pace of 2 minutes per 100 metres and an average running pace of 8 minutes per km at the slowest.
Weather
Held around mid-September, the water is cool compared to summer. The weather is mild but a little unpredictable. The water temperature is around 20 degrees C, according to the race organiser. Most athletes do NOT wear wetsuits for the shorter races, but a wetsuit is recommended for the Long race at 20 km.
There is always a chance of cold or wet weather, so you should take suitable clothing for every eventuality!
