Full event info Mudskipper Welland, in Ontario, Canada. Welland is in the middle of Niagara country, close to Niagara Falls and of course the border with the USA.

This event is held in and along the Welland canal, making it a flat and fast race well-suited to first-time swimrunners. After starting out 7 years ago with a single distance of 7.5 km, the race organisers Canaqua have added an additional run and swim to the end, to offer a 10 km distance as well as the original 7.5 km.

Location

Welland Community Boathouse, 108 Thorold Road East, Welland ON.

This is, of course, on the Welland Canal, on the north side of Welland. It is NOT held at the Welland Flatwater Centre; that is on the south side of Welland.

How to get there

Depending on where you are coming from, you have several options;

By air. There are several airports nearby. The nearest international airport is actually over the border in America - Niagara Falls International, just 40 km away. Next is Buffalo Niagara, also in the USA, at 48 km.
The closest Canadian international airport is John C Munroe International, Hamilton, 70 km away.
And of course there is Toronto, 135 km distant, with TWO international airports - Billy Bishop and Pearson.
The closest regional airports are Niagara Central and Niagara District airports.

From all of the airports you can either hire a car or get a taxi.

By train, there is the Toronto GO system and the Rail Canada's VIA.

By car, Welland has direct access to Highway 406.

Where to stay

The nearest hotel to the Welland Community Boathouse is the Travelodge by Wyndham on Niagara Street. Across the canal there is a Holiday Inn Express and Suites.

There are plenty of other options in and around town, available on Booking.com and AirBnB, although other accommodation search engines are available.

Race distances

There are 2 race distances, 7.5 km and 10 km:

The 7.5 km race is made up of 2.5 km of swimming and 5 km of running, divided over 3 swim sections and 2 run sections.
The 10 km race follows the same route as the 7.5 km event, but adds on another 2.3 km run and a short 150 metre swim at the end.

Race routes

Both distances have the same Start and Finish areas. There are restrooms, changing rooms and showers. All the swim sections are in the canal, and the run sections are on trails next to the canal.

Energy stations

There are no energy stations around the course, but there is food available at the finish area.

Cut-off times

There are NO cut-off times at this event. (I guess it's when the sun sets!).

Weather

Held in early June, the weather is mild but a little unpredictable. The water temperature is around 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit, according to race organiser Canaqua. Wetsuits are not compulsory, but probably a good idea!.

There is always a chance of cold or wet weather, so you should take suitable clothing for every eventuality!
