Full event info Mudskipper Midsummer Classic in Welland, Ontario, Canada. Welland is in the middle of Niagara country, close to Niagara Falls and of course the border with the USA.

This swimrun event is held in and along the Welland canal, starting and finishing at the Welland Flatwater Centre, making it a flat and fast race well-suited to first-time swimrunners.

Location

As opposed to the Welland Mudskipper swimrun event, at the Welland Community Boathouse, the Midsummer Classic swimrun event is held at the Welland Flatwater Centre on the south side of Welland.

How to get there

Depending on where you are coming from, you have several options;

  • By air.  There are several airports nearby. The nearest international airport is actually over the border in America - Niagara Falls International, just 40 km away. Next is Buffalo Niagara, also in the USA, at 48 km.
  • The closest Canadian international airport is John C Munroe International, Hamilton, 70 km away.
  • And of course there is Toronto, 135 km distant, with Pearson international airport.
  • The closest regional airports are Niagara Central and Niagara District airports.

From all of the airports you can either hire a car or get a taxi.

By train, there is the Toronto GO system and the Rail Canada's VIA.

By car, Welland has direct access to Highway 406.

There are plenty of other options in and around town, available on Booking.com and AirBnB, although other accommodation search engines are available.

Race distances

There is ONE race distance, 7.2 km:

  • Stage 1 - Swim 650M – south along swim course then back to start line
  • Stage 2 - Run 1950M – North along the trail and loop around running south back to start finish area
  • Stage 3 - Swim 1000M – North along canal to small dock
  • Stage 4 - Run 3000M - South on the trail and loop back around running north back to start finish
  • Stage 5 - Swim 130M - From start finish south around course to finish line
  • Stage 6 - Run 2000M
  • Stage 7 - Swim 400M

Race routes

There are restrooms, changing rooms and showers. All the swim sections are in the canal, and the run sections are on trails next to the canal.

This is a flat and FAST swimrun event!

Start time is 08:30 am.

  • There are NO cut-off times at this event. (I guess it's when the sun sets!).


Weather

Held in early August, the weather is mild but a little unpredictable. The water temperature is around 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit, according to race organiser Canaqua. Wetsuits are not compulsory, but probably a good idea!.

There is always a chance of cold or wet weather, so you should take suitable clothing for every eventuality!
